As with most Minnesotans in Central Minnesota or the Minneapolis/St. Paul Area fishing on Lake Mille Lacs is a regular occurrence. Fishing on Lake Mille Lacs is a great starting point for people wanting to catch walleye as it is always up there in the talks of best walleye lakes in Minnesota. But now you could receive a free lure from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). To better understand the walleye population, the DNR has tagged around 20,000 walleyes with an orange tag on their bodies. If by chance you happen to catch one of these particular walleyes, remove the tag, return it to the DNR and receive a free fishing lure.

Once the data has been collected a new walleye population estimate will be based on the number of tagged fish captured in survey nets after spawning is completed. To make it easy for anglers the orange tag will be labeled “REWARD”. The DNR states to remove the tag from any walleye caught, even if releasing the fish and to return the tag to the DNR. There will be multiple ways to return the orange tag one is to mail it to DNR Fisheries, 1200 Minnesota Ave. S., Aitkin, MN 56431, there will also be tag return boxes at several businesses around the lake. Overall it is a win, win for everyone. The DNR can collect valuable information and you can receive a brand new lure.
